Summary

Description

On the eastern side of the Forum, separated by a big paved street (Cardo Maximus), lies the Basilica: the indoor place where the community gathered to discuss legal problems and where the main political economic activities took place. The rectangular building with an internal ambulatory, is constituted on the sides by a colonnade with Ionic capitals, that lies on a big foundation wall and still preserves two main entrances near the southern side, where the original thresholds are still visible. At the center of the long eastern side is placed what was called the Tribunal, a site intended for the administration of justice. For the Basilica many construction techniques were used: from the Opus Reticulatum to the Opus Vittatum, parallel horizontal courses of blocks alternated with bricks. The plan of the building, as far as the orientation and the proportions, is concerned conforms to the canon prescribed by the Roman architect Vitruvius, that in his treatise De Architectura, theorized the construction rules for public buildings. The building of the Basilica can be dated back to the late-imperial age, as can the square paved with travertine blocks.
