It is a page of calligraphy of a work called the Sarashina nikki (a travel diary by Sugawara no Takasue no musume that Teika copied out in his later years. The first two lines (starting from right to left) are a poem that goes "Like me, the waterfowl / Spends it night in wretchedness: / Floating on the pond, / Shivering in fitful sleep / As it shakes the hoarfrost from its wings." (pg 80)
