Summary

Description

Aerial port bow view of the motor tanker Esso Manhattan. She had been fitted with flying decks enabling her to carry seven motor torpedo boats (PT boats) as deck cargo which were off-loaded at Brisbane, Australia, in this case. Note the 3 inch AA gun forward, 5 inch gun aft and the 20 mm Oerlikon AA guns in the superstructure forward and aft.

Esso Manhattan was a T2-SE-A1 tanker built at Sun Shipbuilding Company (No. 342), Chester, Pennsylvania (USA), for Standard Oil of New Jersey. She broke in two off New York on 29 March 1943. Both sections were towed in, rejoined and returned to service June 1943. She was finally broken up at Hualien, Taiwan, in 1974 by Chou's Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.
