Summary

Description

Cast of a Nanotyrannus and a model of Nanotyrannus on exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

In 1942, Cleveland Museum of Natural History paleontologist David Dunkle collected the first fossil skull of this animal in the Hell Creek Formation in Carter County, Montana. At first, it was believed that this was a small new species, eventually named Tyrannosaurus lancensis, or "Nanotyrannus". In 2001, paleontologists from the Burpee Museum in Illinois discovered "Jane" in the Hell Creek Formation in Carter County, Montana. Jane was almost complete, except for the skull. Extensive study of "Jane" led many paleontologists to believe there was no such thing as Nanotyrannus, but rather that these fossils were juvenile T. Rexes.

In 2006, a new, almost intact fossil, nicknamed "Bloody Mary", was discovered in Garfield County, Montana. The Murray family still owns the fossil, after an auction in 2013 failed to find a buyer (the asking price was a whopping $9 million). Casts of "Bloody Mary" have upended things even more, as it varies from Jane in specific, significant ways -- and yet, its skull looks like the Cleveland skull.

At any rate, this animal would have lived in North America about 100 to 60 million years ago.

The museum irritatingly does not provide the name of the artist who did the model, or the date of the sculpture.

From CMNH: The artist who sculpted the fleshed out head is named Tyler Keillor, he created it in 2009.
