Every year on August 1st, this is how they celebrate National Day in rural Switzerland. Everyone in a family gets a torch. People light them just outside their homes, then proceed to walk up a trail to a spot overlooking the village. There, wood for a bonfire is ready to be lit. The first ones there get to do the honor (but it's not a race -- the pace was very relaxed). As with any national celebration anywhere in the world, there is music and fireworks works as well.
