Deutsch: Spitzbergen Rentiere (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) sind kleiner und gedrungener als ihre Artgenossen auf dem Festland. Auch ihre Lebenserwartung ist erheblich geringer. Im Wesentlichen liegt das wohl daran, dass die Tiere beim Grasen auf dem steinigen Untergrund sich oftmals die Zähne verletzen, und an den entstehenden Zahnhalsentzündungen verenden. Ein Spitzbergen-Rentier wird kaum älter als zehn Jahre.
English: Svalbard reindeers (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) are smaller and more stocky than their continental relatives. Also, their life expectancy is shorter than that of the mainland animals. This is mainly owing to the fact that they often suffer from tooth injuries when grazing on the low tundra plants. This often leads to inflammation of the dental necks, which is lethal for the animals. Svalbard reindeers seldom become older than ten years of age.
