Description |
Mixed media, Objectivity as Means of Terminating Panics (cut paper and glue, 18” x 14", 1995) by artist Susan Sensemann. The collage illustrates a key mid period and type of work in Susan Sensemann’s career during the 1990s when she created 600 collages from images from 19th-century bibles, mid-20th-century childbirth, health and parenting manuals, encyclopedias, art reproductions and National Geographic magazines and that continued to receive recognition. These works were exhibited extensively and reviewed in numerous art journals and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key mid-career body of work and practice in the artist's oeuvre, which reflected her growing absorption of feminist critique and practice: the 600 collages Sensemann created from images from 19th-century bibles, mid-20th-century childbirth, health and parenting manuals, encyclopedias, art reproductions and National Geographic magazines, during the mid-1990s. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this body of work and change in her art. Sensemann’s work of this type and this collage in particular is discussed in the article and has been discussed by art critics cited in the article. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Sensemann, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
