Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | Illustrate section Television_and_films. The current article text explains the special significance of this image: A still of her with green skin is frequently seen in the end credits of the TV series, and it became an iconic image of Star Trek. Hence the documentary about Susan Oliver's life in 2014 was titled The Green Girl. The image will surely remain essential regardless of any revision to that text.
Note for Wikipedia Policy purposes: I believe this image is acceptable for dual reasons. (1) Its presence is needed to support a piece of explicit critical discussion in an article related to that work or its creator - Susan Oliver was a significant creator of the copyrighted work, portraying the central character of the episode. (2) This is an historic portrait of a person no longer alive - while this image is a poor fit for our expectations of a lead image to identify a person, this image is undoubtedly the most commonly recognized visual identification of the actress. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
Not replaceable by any independently created work. Iconic and historically significant image. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | Single frame image from a TV episode. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
As single frame image from a TV episode the image does not displace commercial opportunities of the original work. Coverage of the historical significance would only contribute towards continuing commercial opportunities for the copyrighted work. |
