Personal videocameras and recorders in the Soviet Union were rare artifacts that belonged only to those who afford them and find a way to procure them. This image was taken during the 1988 Sumgait pogroms in the city of Sumgait, Azerbaijan which shows one of the rioter's improvised weapons. Riots and ethnic infighting had nearly never occurred in the history of the country.
