Seen performing at Delancey Street Station as I wait for the F train. (A pleasant surprise: a rerouted A train, which was what I really needed, would show up instead.)
Musicians are allowed to legally set up and play in the subway, per Metropolitan Transportation Authority guidelines. They may accept tips, but may not use amplification; they may play on the platforms, but not in the trains. Musicians are tolerated and encouraged to make subway commutes more pleasant; the New York City subway, once notorious for muggings and other crimes, not to mention neglect and breakdowns, is very safe and pleasant today, though the age of the infrastructure cannot be hidden.
