Original commentary in the exhibition
Ornithomimosaurs, known as "ostrich-dinosaurs". were among the fastest dinosaurs with extreme running abilities. Their speed probably developed for protecting themselves, not for hunting, as they were not carnivorous. Dromaeosaurids, widely known as "Raptors", were swift hunters, but their bodies were not as highly adapted to fast running as ostrich-dinosaurs or tyrannosaurids; they were better-suited for ambush than pursuit. Dakotaraptor had, however, exceptionally elongated legs for raptors, suggesting it could be a good match for ostrich-dinosaurs occasionally.

  • Strutiomimus sp.: Common features of ostrich-dinosaurs include toothless beaks, large eyes, and their extremely long limbs. This skeleton recreates the moment of a sharp turn while running at its full speed. Discovered in Hell Creek Formation, Montana.
  • Dakotaraptor steini: This is a newly reconstructed skeleton of Dakotaraptor with recently discovered elements, including a partial skull. Its forelimbs show anchoring points for feathers (quill knobs). Discovered in Hell Creek Formation, South Dakota.
