Description Picture of Glenn Ligon's painting Stranger #21 (2005) at the Rubell Museum DC in Washington, D.C., in 2022. A large black painting composed of acrylic and coal dust that contains rows of text applied with thick layers of dust, all of which have been rubbed and etched away to the point of illegibility apart from the first line of text. The text is from James Baldwin's 1953 essay Stranger in the Village.
