Summary

Description
English: Stott Park Bobbin Mill. Stott Park Bobbin Mill has been restored by English Heritage as a working mill with a steam engine (which has a 'rest day' on Fridays!) as well as an electrically powered lathe workshop. Situated in the Lake District with its abundant supplies of wood, the mill was in continuous operation from 1835 to 1971. It made wooden bobbins of various sizes for the Lancashire textile industry before diversifying and producing a range of turned wooden products such as fork and spade handles as well as duffle coat toggles for the Royal Navy during the Second World War. The advent of plastic bobbins finally put the mill out of business. During our guided tour one of the old employees demonstrated the lathes. The finished bobbins were taken to Lakeside station for transportation across to Lancashire and beyond, (see 348485).
