English: Stirling Castle sits on a volcanic hill. The site may have been fortified in ancient times, but the first known record of a castle is in 1110. The present buildings date mainly from 1490-1600. It was an important royal residence in Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots, among others, was crowned here.
