Summary

Phases in building of the Stephansdom in Vienna.

Legend

Growth of the Stephansdom: The Roman towers and Giant door from the burned-out first church were used as part of the Romanesque second church built to replace it. Forty years later, construction began on the Gothic Albertine Choir and 55 years after that Duke Rudolf IV's additions enlarged the structure, around and above the second church. The second church was then dismantled and moved from inside the completed building, leaving the third church as the Stephansdom seen today.
