Summary

Description

Steamboat monkeyflower, Diplacus ovatus, Nevada, Jobs Peak Ranch Trail, Carson Range, Sierra Nevada, Sheridan, Carson Valley drainage, elevation 1477 m (4845 ft).

Limited to the slopes and valley floors just east of the Sierra Nevada in western Nevada, from Reno south through Carson Valley, this species is found on various soil types, including decomposed granite such as here, at elevations between about 1400-1650 meters (4600-5400 feet).

Care must be used to distinguish this species from other members of the Diplacus nanus - Diplacus mephiticus group, especially toward the south end of its range. Diplacus ovatus differs by its combination of exclusively magenta flowers; largest leaves ovate to obovate, >8 mm wide, at least some acuminate to cuspidate; most plant parts glandular-villous (not merely puberulent).
