Rien ne manque à ce savantaménagement, ni le plan en relief du terrain où ont été opéréesles fouilles, ni la réduction amusante de lApadâna, salle du TrônedArtaxercès Mnémon, qui régnait quatre cents ans avant notreère. Les fouilles ont fait connaître le plan du palais, lem-placement et la forme des colonnes, la disposition et la couleurdes briques émaillées des archers et des lions, des encadrementsdes portes, la façon des entablements et de la charpente, lanature des bois. La divinité ailée, le couronnement des portes,les ornements cannelés des façades ont été restitués daprès lespalais achéménides de I^ersepolis et de Firouzabad. La superficiecouverte est évaluée à 9.200 mètres. LApadâna se développe en une immense et large nef entre SUSIANE ET PERSE

LA REINE NAPIR-ASOUépouse du roi Ountash-Gal — 23 - deux bas-côtés. La nef a le caractère dun temple largement ouvert,et les bas-côtés semblent, par leur façade extérieure, des forteres-ses massives, aux portes étroites. Au fronton de la nef, la divinitéailée déploie son vol immobile, entre deux files de lions. A linté-rieur de la nef, six rangées de six colonnes rondes dressent deschapiteaux faits de la tête, du poitrail et des pattes de devant detaureaux. A lintérieur des bas-côtés, derrière deux rangées de sixcolonnes, se déploie la frise des Archers. Des fragments de la décoration générale sont visibles dans lasalle suivante. Tout dabord, le haut dune colonne, avec sa char-pente et ses têtes de Taureaux, de marbre gris, aux oreilles etaux cornes vertes, au nez froncé, au front large. Lexpression deces formidables têtes est de rage, de souffrance, et aussi dorgueil.Ils frémissent du poids qui leur est infligé, et font effort enmême temps pour garder
