Description
English: Gilbert Gostwyck Cory, 1891. Gilbert Gostwyck Cory was elected to the position of Toowoomba Mayor in 1891. Born in the Paterson district of New South Wales in 1839, he came to Toowoomba in 1858 and took up service at the Cecil Plains station of James Taylor, a successful pastoralist and landowner who was Mayor of Toowoomba in 1890. Cory married a daughter of James Taylor. After successfully managing the station for a number of years, Gilbert Cory moved to Toowoomba where he took an active part in civic affairs. Vacy homestead, in Russell Street, was built for him during the 1880's.
