Summary

Description
English: The Star Theatre under construction. The builder was Harold Snell. Previously picture shows were held in the Don Picture Show on the corner of Cavenagh Street and Bennett Street which consisted of a high galvanised iron fence, a slab of cement, seating and was completely open air. Later H. Snell built a hotel on that site after the Starr Theatre was opened. The Star Theatre was 2/3 under cover, but because there was no air-conditioning in those days, the area immediately in front of the screen was uncovered. Tom Harris became the proprietor. In the days of the silent films he used to sing to entertain the audience during the interval. His future wife, who was then Heather Bell, played the piano. (PH0233-0018)
