Summary

Description

St Roberts Church, Pannal, North Yorkshire, England. Piscina and top of sedilia in south wall of chancel. They are low on the wall because the floor has been raised by 3 feet to allow for ledgers and graves. The object on the wall above the piscina appears to be a lavabo which must have been reset in the wall after the floor was raised (previously the position would have been too high). However the English Heritage listing description suggest that it is a corbel which has been reset, and that it may have been used for the lenten veil. There is a matching corbel on the north side of the chancel.

Note to editors: This is not a swimming pool. A piscina is a shallow basin placed near the altar of a church, or else in the vestry or sacristy, used for washing the communion vessels. The sacrarium is the drain itself. Anglicans usually refer to the basin, calling it a piscina. (See Piscina).
