Summary

Description St. John's Dog "Nell", taken 1867. Nell was born in 1856 and owned by the Earl of Home (1799-1881). The photograph shows nell age c. 12.

Source Archival: Photograph obtained from http://www.lorkenfarms.co and http://chocolatelabs.co.uk history page as described below. Animal pictured died within 5 - 10 years of this date, allowing the photograph to be positively dated at over 130 years old and hence in the public domain. (As a photograph of this specific dog, it is also not possible to source a different version in discussing labrador history.)

  • In the original source the dog is described as being "12 years old here" and the photograph stated to be taken in 1867 with the dog born in 1856.
