Description St John the Evangelist descending into his burial vault behind the altar with a congregation in the background and two Saxon shields behind the altar. From Martin Luther, Das Symbolum der Heiligen Aposteln, Wittenberg, Georg Rhau, 1548. Woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder. (Another print of the woodcut is also in the National Gallery in Washington.)
