DescriptionSt. Margaret RC Church, Buffalo, New York - 20200525.jpg
English: St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church, 1395 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. The second Catholic parish to set up shop in the North Park area of the city, St. Margaret was founded in 1916 by Bishop Dennis Dougherty and named in honor of the late Margaret Bingham, sister of the previous bishop, Charles Colton, fulfilling the latter's wishes. The current church, the third to house the congregation, dates to 1958 and was designed in a simplified Gothic Revival style with Modernist influences: the trio of lancet windows flanked by decorative pier buttresses and set above a compound-arched triple entrance is a hallmark of the former style, but the sleek lines in the cross finial atop the central gable, and the fact that the entrance arches are segmental rather than pointed, suggest the latter. Statuary on the church grounds (off the right margin according to the perspective of this photo) depicts the Madonna and child as well as Padre Pio of Pietralcina, who is also honored with a small chapel at the east end of the narthex.
