English: St. John's Close, Canongate. The houses on this side of the close in St. John's Street were demolished, with the notable exception of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge which contains what is claimed to be the world's oldest masonic lodge room still in use. Tobias Smollett, author of the 18thC novel 'Humphrey Clinker', lodged in the first-floor house reached by the turnpike staircase.
