Sphaerophorus venerabilis Wedin, Högnabba & Goward

Location: Glacier Peak Wilderness, Washington, USA

Observation Notes: in rainforest at ~4000’ near Sitkum Creek
The key I have access to distinguishes two epiphytic species of Sphaerophorus:
S. venerabilis — main stems irregularly dimpled; dense clusters of 3rd-order branchlets confined to base if present; black pycnidia abundant
S. tuckermannii — main stems at most weakly dimpled; dense clusters of 3rd-order branchlets scattered throughout; pycnidia sparse
I’ve never seen S. venerabilis before, but thought that this looked different from the usual material of S. tuckermannii (sparser “foliage” and black dots).
