Summary

Description
English: Snow in the reserve trenches, Western Front, during World War I. The sheer misery of the trenches in the winter is well illustrated by this photograph of troops walking along a reserve trench. The men, huddled into their greatcoats, are black against the snow around the trench.

There was no way for the troops to keep warm when they were in the trenches. Their uniforms were not proof against the cold and they could not move around to keep warm. As one officer wrote in 1917, 'The difficulty is to keep one's feet warm. One walks and they get warm, stand for one minute and they are icicles again.'
[Original reads: 'Snow at the front. Troops leaving reserve trench.']
