Summary
[edit]Description |
The Skunk River Bridge near Ames, IA. Photo taken from the South side, facing North. 41°59′11″N 93°35′14″W / 41.98639°N 93.58722°W This was one of 3 bridges commissioned and built by King Iron Bridges for Story County in 1876, crossing the Skunk River. It was originally located near Cambridge, Iowa. But, in 1916, it was deemed no longer adequate for the daily traffic, so the Cambridge crossing was replaced, and this truss was relocated to its present location southeast of Ames. It was used lightly until 1990, when the road it was on was vacated. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This was one of only a few "Warren Truss" iron bridges built in Iowa in the late 1800s, during a time of great growth in Story County.[1]
