Summary
DescriptionSkoteini-Argolidas+Katavothra Peloponnese Greece.jpg |
English: Valley-like plain Skoteini-Alea, a 15 km long karst depression in 560 m (Argolis, Peloponnese). The plain has the character of a polje). The village Skoteini rests on a fertile slope (an alluvial fan) near by.
Larger streams or rivers never developed in this plain, as most waters seep through the soil and through karstic rock formations underneath. In geological ages subsurface waterways developed and formed two ponors on the plain’s surface. In Greece a ponor is called “katavothra”. In the Peloponnese most villages engaged in traditional small scale agriculture and struggled with conditions of the soil often dried out too much or seasonally flooded. To ensure faster and better drainage before the growing season starts, the “katavothras” are nowadays reinforced to prevent larger debris from clogging them. |
