Description

Site of former Kenilworth railway station

Original description:

Site of Kenilworth Station

The station was situated where the builders merchant's yard is today, and the houses beyond are on the site of former rail connected Cherry Orchard clay pits from which material to build many local houses was excavated.* The station closed and all passenger services were withdrawn in 1965 and the line was singled in 1972. Through passenger services were re-instated in 1977 with the opening of Birmingham International Station. There have been many plans over the years to correct Dr Beeching's mistake and re-open a station at Kenilworth but although there is considerable local support, nobody wants it in their "back yard"! The other problem is that the single line is now very busy so there is limited scope for stopping trains. This may change however as the recent West Midlands Rail Usage Plan calls for the re-instatement of the double track to Leamington as well as the doubling of the stretch to Coventry that was only ever a single line.

  • (NOT SO: THE BUILDER'S MERCHANTS IS SITED UPON THE FORMER GOODS YARD AND THE HOUSES IMMEDIATELY BEYOND ARE UPON THE STATION SITE. THE CHERRY ORCHARD BRICKWORKS WAS APPROXIMATELY 500 YARDS BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPHER, NOT IN FRONT. Robin D Leach, Kenilworth)
