DescriptionSite of Wellfield Railway Station 7, 17-06-2020.jpg
English: View South towards Wellfield Road Bridge over the Hart-Haswell Walkway at the site of Wellfield Railway Station.
The station booking office was located on the near side of the bridge, where the abutment tops are now exposed (the bridge having been widened to enable the road and booking office to both sit on top). The station platforms were located out of shot to the right, the photographer being stood on a path which traces the route of a former path which once provided access to up (southbound) platform, although all remnants of the original station platforms have been demolished. The station opened in 1882 to allow interchange between the North Eastern Railway's then newly opened Castle Eden Railway from Redmarshall and the route of the Hartlepool Dock & Railway Co. line of 1835 from Hartlepool; the latter was later incorporated into the NER's inland West Hartlepool to Sunderland via Haswell Line. Stopping Castle Eden Railway services ceased in 1931 but the station remained open until 1952 (it had never been served by goods trains) and a single line through it was retained until around 1984.
