DescriptionSisters of Charity Hospital, Buffalo, New York - 20200923.jpg
English: Sisters of Charity Hospital, 2157 Main Street, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. The oldest hospital in Buffalo, Sisters traces its history to 1848 - the year after the founding of the city's Roman Catholic diocese - as a way of addressing both the general lack of organized health care in the city as well as the anti-Catholic sentiment that pervaded the city's institutional structure. An initial spate of controversy over the state legislature's use of public funds to prop up a religious facility was rendered moot by the hospital's exemplary performance during the city's 1849-50 cholera epidemic. The hospital's original location in what's now the Allentown neighborhood was superseded in 1876 by a larger facility at the corner of Main Street and Delavan Avenue (currently the site of Canisius College's Koessler Athletic Center), which itself was replaced in 1946 by the current facility.
