Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Sir Nicholas Carew. Black and coloured chalk, 54.8 × 38.5 cm, Kunstmuseum Basel.

Sir Nicholas Carew was equerry to Henry VIII at the time of this study. He was executed for treason in 1539.

The drawing is regarded as a fine example of Holbein's draughtsmanship and, since it has not been cut down, of the original format of his studies for oil paintings. The oil portrait of Carew at Drumlanrig Castle is based on this sketch or on a lost painting by Holbein. It is thought to be either by a follower of Holbein or to have been started by Holbein and finished by another hand (Müller, p. 381).
