Summary

Description

HMAS TORRENS (I) served in the Royal Australian Navy 1916-1926 and saw war service in Malayan, Mediterranean and Adriatic waters before returning to home duties in 1919. From 1920 to 1926 TORRENS served as a training platform for the Reserves. On 24 November 1930 the decommissioned destroyer was used for gunnery target practice off Sydney.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio Collection. Sam Hood (1870-1956) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 72-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
