Description

Installation by Shirley Tse, Negotiated Differences (Hand-turned wood, 3d prints with wood, metal and plastic filament, Installation dimension variable, 2019. Collection of M+, Hong Kong). The image illustrates a key later-career phase in Shirley Tse's art in the beginning in the 2010s when she focused on installations combining multiple mediums and wide-ranging materials, processes and references. In this sprawling, creature-like, floor-to-ceiling work she used carved wood spindles and 3D-printed joints made of wood, metal and plastic filament that were slotted together like toy-building set pieces to explore themes such as accommodation, interdependency, plurality, improvised play and contemporary life in the 21st century. This body of work and individual piece were publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions and discussed by critics in major art journals and daily press publications.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key later-career phase in Shirley Tse's art in the 2010s and 2020s: her installation works employing sculpture, photography and video, which have explored the plasticity of ideas and narrative, multi-dimensional thought, social negotiation, democracy and climate. These works often emphasize accretion, contingency, handwork and sprawl, connecting them to the sculptors Eva Hesse and Louise Bourgeois. They incorporate and make connections between diverse materials and processes, identifiable elements and references, and wide-ranging sources. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this key later body of work, which brought Tse new recognition through exhibitions and commissions, coverage by major critics and publications and museum acquisitions. Tse's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Shirley Tse, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.
