Shepherdstown_river_lock_on_chesapeake_and_Ohio_canal.jpg (640 × 428 pixels, file size: 167 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Description
English: Pic of the Shepherdstown River lock at 72.65 miles, just below Lock 38 on the Six mile level. NPS site says: The stone was cut of gray-blue limestone and is 15’ wide. The canal is close to 100’ wide in this area. The river lock enters the canal at about a 200 degree angle to the up-canal towpath opening. The lock provides the base for the wooden bridge, which allowed mule passages. The river gate pockets were placed shortly after the flare of the extended walls that bordered the river. The flood that washed out the dam in 1889s made the lock unusuable. To close off the flow of water out of the canal into the lock and in the river, an earth closure was built at the towpath. The earth dam leaked and was replaced by a stone wall in the early 1890s.
