The Big Five Mass Extinctions, inferred from an analysis of the extinction rates (data not shown, but see Figures 2 and 3), are indicated by the arrows. They correspond to the times of largest diversity loss. Note that in the genus-level data the Devonian consists of two peaks, indicating that the Late Devonian is more complex than the other big extinctions. Figure modified from Sepkoski (1997). |
