Summary

Description
English: Illustration of the concept of the self-consistent mean-field. Solving the Schrodinger equation for a certain potential, or mean-field, V(r) generates a set of single-particle wave-functions. These wave-functions are then used to construct the density of particles. After the density is computed, the potential must be re-calculated. This so-called self-consistent loop stops when either the wave-functions, the density, the potential, or some combination thereof does not change any more from one iteration to the next. This method is applied in atomic physics, nuclear structure and cluster physics, among others.
