English: Padlock of the Shrine of Mary for the Aachen Pilgrimage 2000. After the shrine was locked, the lock is sealed with lead and the key is sawn into two parts. The key head is kept by the cathedral chapter, the key bit is presented to the Lord Mayor of the City Council as the representative for safekeeping. At the opening of the shrine in 2007, the padlock was then smashed during a solemn, holy Mass.
