Description
English: Simplified life cycle of Schistosoma. (A) the adult schistosome male carries the

female and sexually reproduce in their definitive mammalian host; (B) Eggs are released from the definitive mammalian host through either defecation (S. mansoni and S. japonicum) or urination (S. haematobium); (C) the eggs hatch into a larval stage called a miracidium, and seek out and penetrate a suitable intermediate snail host; (D) successful miracidium develop into asexual sporocysts within their intermediate snail host; (E) a second free-swimming larval stage called a cercaria is released from the intermediate snail host, and seeks out a

suitable definitive mammalian host to penetrate.
