deposited to Palace on the Water
Notes An old woman gazes ahead, shielding her eyes from the candlelight, while the boy behind her holds his candle, ready to be lit. Created after Rubens' etching (Hollstein, 17, 1976, p. 162, cat. 2; Hollstein, vol. 20, 1978, p. 119, cat. 48) after original painting today in the Mauritshuis (inv.no. 1150). Many copies are usually associated with Godfried Schalcken (1643-1703), among them, the Warsaw's painting is one of the best versions.
