Summary

Description
English: Composite multispectral "thermal fusion" satellite image.

This image combines thermal infrared (shown in red) with visible green and blue to provide better visual context than thermal alone.

The thermal imagery correlates with the bathymetric data regarding elevations in seafloor topology around the alleged location of Sandy Island. However, no features at or near the surface were present in the visual or shortwave infrared spectrums of this satellite image granule.

Geographically, this image shows the alleged location of Sandy Island, New Caledonia. Chesterfield Islands are visible to the west.

NASA Landsat 7 ETM+ bands used were 6 (thermal), 2 (green), and 1 (blue). The image was resampled to 60m resolution which is the native resolution of the thermal sensor, and cropped.

Note 1: The thermal band data is aligned perfectly with the visual bands. However, the extent of the thermal data begins slightly further to the right than the visual bands due to the satellite's physical sensor configuration. This is not an error.

Note 2: Water in any significant quantity (such as the ocean) is opaque to thermal infrared wavelengths. Thermal imaging cannot see "into" the ocean. Nonetheless, the surface temperature of the ocean is influenced by many factors, including the proximity of underwater topology.
