DescriptionSandusky, Ohio - 20201212 - 08 - Erie County Courthouse.jpg
English: The Erie County Courthouse, 323 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio, December 2020. The courthouse was erected in 1874 originally, but owes almost all of its original appearance to a controversial 1936-39 remodeling campaign overseen by the Works Progress Administration, which stripped away the Second Empire detailing away in favor of a much simpler and more streamlined design that exemplifies a restrained take on the Art Deco style, with a smooth stone façade, stylized fluted pilasters flanking the front and side entrances, and a new tower with pyramidal capstone that replaced the ornate mansard-roofed original. The only remaining detailing from the original iteration of the building are the keystone-topped arched windows on the ground floor.
