Description

This may not have been the first photo that I took in San Francisco, but it is the earliest one that I kept. It shows Powell Street, near the cable car turntable at Powell and Market Streets. Thre are two cable cars in the photo, and a Gray Line sightseeing bus is in the foreground. The cross street is O'Farrell Street. The next two are Geary Street and Post Street.

Lefty's is Lefty O'Doul's Restaurant, established by a baseball player and manager who was born in San Francisco and was popular there. (Note the baseball over the awning.) The restaurant still exists, but has moved around the corner on Geary Street. The Manx Hotel and Crane Hotel no longer exist. The Manx hotel was there in 1915, maybe earlier. The St. Francis Hotel is in the block after Geary Street. The Chancellor Hotel is still on the other side of Post Street.

There is a continuous cable under the street, driven at a central power station. You can see the gap where the operator grabs the cable with a "grip," to move the car, and releases it when the car stops,
