DescriptionSamutsongkram The Nativity of Our Lady 1.jpg
English: Located in Moo 7, Bang Nok Kwaek subdistrict, Bang Khonthi, the Nativity of Our Lady was built by Father Paulo Salmn, commonly known as “Khun Por Pao”, a French missionary. It took six years to complete the cathedral, and the official opening ceremony, presided over by Bishop Louis Vey, was held in 1896.
The term “Cathedral” refers to the most important Christian church in a diocese. This cathedral is considered the principal church in the western region, consisting of 4 provinces, and is acclaimed as one of the most significant and beautiful Christian churches in Thailand.
Its entire architecture features firebricks, and the walls which were plastered with mortar - a mixture of lime and dark-colored sugarcane syrup that creates marble-like appearance. The interior design displays several groups of artworks created in Neo Gothic art, e.g. of a sculpture of saints, a pulpit, a baptismal font, candle holders, stained glass windows, and 14 bas-relief ceramic sculptures glazed and painted in gold depicting “The Passion”, all of which were imported from France.
