English: The Great Synagogue, Johannesburg.The Great synagogue, located on Wolmarans Street was the second synagogue built by the Johannesburg Hebrew Congregation opened in August 1912. Its architecture is of "Byzantine Style" and was inspired by Santa Sophia. the famous sixth century church in Istanbul. It is listed as one of the 100 places in Johannesburg identified for their outstanding cultural, historical,
architectural and natural interests.
Sold to a private buyer in 1999, its furnishings and fittings were removed and relocated in a newly constructed synagogue. Scale: 1:75
