DescriptionSaint Praxedes by Ficherelli (Bardi-Serzelli version).jpg
English: Painting of Saint Praxedes by Felice Ficherelli (1603–1660). This variant was in the collection of the Bardi Serzelli family from before 1681 until 1954. It was sold by Dorotheum auction house in 2017.
It is believed to be the basis for another painting by Ficherelli and thence for one attributed to Vermeer. Oil on canvas, 115 x 90 cm, framed.
Image description (English): In the foreground, a woman kneels and wrings blood from a cloth into an ornamented urn or vase. She is wearing a red Renaissance-style dress with white cuffs and collar. Her face is turned downward and her eyelids are lowered. The vase is black with gilt trim, sitting on the stone plinth of some structure which is outside the painting on the viewer's left. Behind her, in the mid-ground, a decapitated man's body and head lay on the ground. In the background are buildings and a cloudy sky.
