Summary
[edit]Description | Picture of Mark Rothko's painting Sacrifice (1946) at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 2023. An abstract watercolor painting on paper, composed of several organic abstract shapes in muted colors on a dusky, brown and grey background. A blue shape with an orange oval atop it and a halo-like circle at its apex sits in the bottom left corner, below a row of short vertical brown stripes that crosses the width of the work. Another row of similar stripes sits further up the work. Between the two rows of brown stripes are three bright orange horizontal stripes, connected on the right side, which form a central focal point on the center left of the work. They are adjacent to a small outline of a circle, filled with a smaller circle of muted yellow. The shapes all combine to appear like an abstracted scene of vaguely human figures and symbols. |
