Summary

Description

The XV-5 was an experimental V/STOL aircraft which first flew in 1964. It was powered by two General-Electric J85 engines with the exhaust gases directed through three fans, one in the nose and one in each wing. The system generated plenty of lift, although the transition between vertical and horizontal flight wasn't very smooth. Two were built, of which this was the second, the first being destroyed in a fatal accident. It's US military serial is 62-4506, although it is preserved in a joint US Army / NASA colour scheme. US Army Aviation Museum. Fort Rucker. Alabama, USA.
