"On June 15, 1823, Rancho Santa Maria de Los Penasquitos was granted by the first Mexican Governor of California to Captain Francisco Maria Ruiz, Military Commandant of the San Diego Presidio from 1806 to 1827. It was the first Mexican land grant to California. This adobe was built by Captain Ruiz in 1824, who transferred title of the land grant to Francisco Maria Alvarado in 1837."
