English: A Roman copper alloy figurine of a naked child - a Cupid. Both hands and the right foot are missing. The front of the figurine and its facial features are a little worn but the back is better preserved. The figurine is in a running pose with the right arm raised. The right leg is kicked back. The sex of the figurine is unclear. The hair is held in a small bun at the neck and the details of the hair are engraved.
Emma Durham kindly comments: The Cupid is very typical of the pieces found in Britain, the majority of which are in this stance, looking up and with the right arm raised. More generally the hair is in ringlets rather than the bun which this piece has. There are a number of Cupids like this from northern Britain, but they tend to have longer, skinnier limbs and bodies. This chubbier version is more similar to an example from Avebury or a larger statuette from Cirencester which is also wingless. This is a nice piece which is unfortunately in bad condition. |
